2017 European Athletics Congress Convention, Vilnius, Lithuania

The 2017 European Athletics Congress Convention took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 12-14 October.

The 26th European Athletics Congress is the general assembly of the Member Federations and the supreme authority of the European Athletic Association. The Congress consists of the Council and delegates of the 50 Member Federations. Each Member Federation in good standing, according to the European Athletics Constitution, has one vote.

European Athletics’ Member Federations unanimously approved all eight proposed amendments to the continental governing body’s Constitution during the European Athletics Congress in Vilnius, Lithuania on Saturday.

At this congress, Azerbaijan was represented by General Secretary of the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation Mr. Maharram Sultanzade.

World javelin champion Johannes Vetter from Germany and world pole vault champion Aikaterini Stefanidi from Greece were named 2017 European Athletes of the Year at the Golden Tracks award ceremony in Vilnius, Lithuania on Saturday.

At a star-studded gala, world 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm from Norway and world high jump silver medallist Yuliia Levchenko from Ukraine were also crowned male and female Rising Stars.  In a year in which they were both crowned world champions, Vetter and Stefanidi also created their own piece of history in Vilnius. Vetter is the first German to be crowned male European Athlete of the Year while Stefanidi is the first Greek athlete – male or female – to lift the accolade.
